We’ve truly embraced the shark theme in our house right now. When my daughter announced yesterday that we needed to bake, I knew just what we had to make: shark fin cupcakes! These are both super easy and super fun to make. And your kiddos won’t be able to resist helping.
What you need:
- Cake mix and ingredients to make
- Cupcake liners (bonus if they’re shark or ocean themed!)
- Your favorite icing recipe (or prepared icing). We used the Wilson Buttercream Icing recipe.
- Blue food coloring
- Oreo cookies
- Optional: Star decorating tip and decorating bag
Instructions
1. Prepare cupcakes according to package directions.
Let your kiddos help. Stitch helped with pouring, cracking the eggs, and putting the liners in the cupcake pans.
2. Prepare and color your icing.
We made our own icing, using the Wilton buttercream recipe, because it just tastes so much better than the prepared icing you can get in the grocery store. But, do whatever will be most effective for you and your family.
If you make your own, be prepared for the mess. One of my mottos is, “If you didn’t get messy, you didn’t have fun.” But I recognize that not everyone has that tolerance level!
Don’t forget to add blue food coloring to your frosting and mix to desired color.
3. Ice your cupcakes.
We used a star decorating tip in a disposable decorating bag, but you can just as easily spread a thick layer of frosting on the top of each cupcake. Use the tool you think your child will be most interested in using themselves.
Stitch was mostly interested in icing one cupcake. Then she’d lick off the frosting and ice it again. We repeated this several times. So, I iced the remaining cupcakes.
4. Place your shark fins on the cupcakes.
Cut Oreos in quarters using a sharp knife. You’ll lose a few to cracking, but for the most part, they cut better than I had expected.
Placing the fins is a perfect activity for little hands!
5. Enjoy!
Makes a great birthday cake too!
It happened to be my birthday the day we made these cupcakes, so we opted to make this my cake. Seriously, one of the most fun birthday cakes I’ve had! And the adventures making the it? Priceless.
