Today is Teacher Appreciation Day, and Sunday is Mother’s Day. May is also filled with graduation celebrations. So, when I was choosing our featured book(s) for May, I wanted something more gifty for adults. Coloring books fit the bill! They’re all the rage right now–a great mindfulness activity and their benefits are well-documented. May’s featured book is a gift pack of Words of Wisdom: Literary Quotes, Folk Art Patterns to Color, and a set of 12 Crayola colored pencils.
Usborne Books & More carries some absolutely fabulous coloring books. In January they released two new Kane Miller coloring books–Words of Wisdom: Literary Quotes and Words of Wisdom: Inspirational Quotes. These over-sized coloring books (measuring 9.5″ x 12″, with a finished size of 9″ x 12″) feature 24 posters, printed on card stock and with perforated edges so you can easily hang them or share with others. The back of each poster includes a short biography of the author and the work.
When my sample of Literary Quotes arrived, my husband, Lloyd, immediately asked for his own copy so he could color and hang some of the posters on the walls of his cubicle at work. Last Saturday, we had a date night at home after our daughter went to bed. We each chose a poster to color from Literary Quotes. The quotes range from books like Harry Potter, Les Miserables, Pippi Longstocking, and A Christmas Carol. The artwork enhances the quotes, making the posters fun to color. Lloyd used pens to color his quote from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and I used colored pencils to color my quote from Guess How Much I Love You. They were just the right amount of detail for us to be able to finish coloring in an evening. And we were able to connect, chill, and chat while we colored.
While I chose Literary Quotes to include in this month’s gift pack, I’d like to note that Inspirational Quotes is also wonderful. I actually struggled a bit to choose between them. Inspiration Quotes includes quotes from Tom Hanks, Nelson Mandella, Christopher Columbus, and many more. I’m impressed by the variety of quotes, sources, and artwork in both of these books. Each book retails for $6.99.
The other coloring book included in the gift pack is Folk Art Patterns to Color by Svetlana Dorosheva. This beautiful 32-page coloring book opens with historical information about folk art–the materials and objects used, as well as background on festival art. Patterns to color include Hungarian Dancers, Russian Dolls, British Military Quilts, and more. The last page also includes information on accessing Usborne Quicklinks, an online resource from Usborne Publishing that shares more information about folk art. The patterns are interesting and moderately detailed, but not overwhelmingly so. And you can’t beat the price at $5.99.
Order this gift pack at $12.98 + tax, and it also includes a free set of 12 Crayola colored pencils. In fact, if you order any coloring book this month, I’ll send you a set of 12 Crayola colored pencils as a gift.
